Oil Trouble in Nigeria continues

April 26, 2008
MILITANTS in southern Nigeria have claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on refinery’s after announcing they had sabotaged another pipe line.

The fourth such attack in the past week, it has promoted a number of workers for the oil producer ExxonMobil, to strike in fear of their safety.

N.Y Mercantile Exchange traders have reacted to the events sending oil prices skyrocketing amid concerns over supply from Nigeria.

ExxonMobil, who have a daily output of around 2 million barrels of crude oil a day, have not specified how much production has been lost due to the sabotage and strikes.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, said its fighters hit a pipeline late Thursday in southern Rivers State, bringing to four the number of pipelines the group claims it has blown up in the past week.

The group said in a statement that the pipeline belongs to a Royal Dutch Shell joint venture. A Shell spokesman had no immediate comment on Friday.
